Collegiate Shabby Chic Bedroom for Daughter’s Birthday

April 4, 2015

A few months ago, I walked into my daughter’s room and the fun gerbera daisy teenage hot pink and purple seemed a little too youngish for my now collegiate daughter.

What if we redecorate her room Shabby Chic for her birthday?

It would be a little more upscale yet forgivable for needing to be on a strict budget.

After I pulled out some inspiration fabric from my fabric stash, I proposed the idea to her, which she loved.

Ten yards of utter gorgeousness should refresh my daughter’s bedroom easily!

BOOKCASE

First, my daughter needed a new bookcase to add to her two old ones.

After all she is a college student who plans to major in English, which means books!

Since she plans to minor in history, that means more books!

Then she wants to pursue her masters degree so she can teach, which means even more books!

The perfect Shabby Chic bookcase surprisingly came from IKEA!

DUVET

After buying a twin-sized duvet, I used it as the template for its cover.

SHEER CURTAINS

Although my original intent was a valence with the floral, with sheers hanging behind that, all hung creatively on the new shabby chic rod, plans changed to only the sheers.

After removing her old valence, I set the fabric aside to wash.

Since my daughter loved the fabric, I promised her a summer blouse from it.

Since she never liked the curtain rod she found hanging in her room when we moved in, we got rid of it.

And surprise! Here is the original wall color that now explains how the whitish grey walls had a purple undertone.

Took the curtain rod down and discovered purple paint that must have cause the off white to look purplish when we moved in

Reusing fabric from our Egyptian costumes, I sewed long sheers for her widow.

After sewing eyelets in the sheers, I used narrow satin ribbon to string through the eyelets and tie to the rod.

ACCESSORIES

With the remaining fabric, I also covered her old bulletin board and creating two huge pillows for her bed.

When she’s off from classes later this summer, I’m going to let her help me paint her furniture to look more shabby chic.

Then we need to get her a new desk, shabby chic, of course!

COMMENTS FROM MY OLD BLOG

Anonymous – April 21, 2015 – That is almost exactly how I made a duvet cover a few years ago. Sewing a panel along each side works great for making the top of the bed look good! Beautiful fabric and a fine job at that! I used buttons on the end of my duvet, but only because I had buttons to spare! I just finished a window treatment project, roman shade and drapes for our great room. Linda
