Beachy Shabby Chic Powder Bathroom in the Basement

March 8, 2024

With the onset of winter, we enlisted Larry and his team to renovate the horrendous basement bathroom, inherited upon purchase of the house.

Basement powder room BEFORE renovation of newly purchased old townhouse

Since the purchase, a misplaced toilet in the powder room on the main level, dripped water into this room for who knows how long until Larry’s team discovered it while fixing my dryer venting in the ceiling.

Thankfully Larry’s team fixed all the mistakes we inherited from this house purchase, which meant we now had a hole in the ceiling that needed repair.

That would be conquered in the remodel.

DESIGN PROCESS

While I meeting at Larry’s office in Alexandria in early January, I again took my palette of blues.

This time he told his assistant that he was letting me make all my choices with no guidance.

In our previous planning sessions, Larry always guided me to choose a light wall color, when I chose a medium tone.

Since I wanted beadboard for the bottom half of the wall, I wanted a stronger color on top, so I chose French Colony Behr Marquee paint, in satin.

Although…I really wanted a darker blue than this! 😉

While looking at the floor tile, I found this stunning Shabby Chic look which would be perfect, since my sewing room comprises the bulk of the basement floor plan.

The rustic wood tones would coordinate well with the wooden floors in the basement.

Although Larry and his assistant seemed to like my plan, my husband was dubious, although he assured me to go for whatever I wanted.

After choosing the other elements, I purchased some decor pieces which I stored in my sewing room, along with overflow from the other two on-going projects for the laundry room and sewing room. (Stay tuned for those reveals.)

FINIS!

By March, the powder room was complete!

I purchased the cabinet a couple of years ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, then they went out of business. Glad I grabbed this one (and one other for the other powder bath) when I did.

All the wall art is from Hobby Lobby.

The fluffy mat had been packed away from my apartment, just waiting for this day.

The hooks will come in handy when I’m trying on clothes that I sew. This will make a great fitting room!

The over the door rack came from Homegoods, while the soap dispenser came from Tuesday Morning, another favorite store now out of business.

It’s getting more difficult to find French Country items, so I’m glad I found the ones I did.

When my husband, Mr. Mid-Century Modern, saw the grand reveal, he was amazed!

Of all the bathrooms, this is his favorite!

Now I wish I had shabby chic-ed our master bathroom! 😉

EPILOGUE APRIL 2024

An electrician who came to do some repair work in the basement was wowed by this powder room!
