Paint samples, new crepe myrtle, planting entryway urns

June 26, 2009

Turning my attention to the next painting job, I reviewed the colors on the main floor.

REVIEWING THE COLORS USED SO FAR

I painted the powder room sage green.

Then we painted the living and dining rooms tea green which beautifully creates variations of yellows and greens with hues throughout the day depending on the sunlight.

While I’m certain the kitchen is destined to become a creamy yellow, I’m thinking the family room will become tea green. Maybe.

Although I’m strongly leaning towards the stairwell at the center point of the house being painted a creamy yellow, I’m puzzled over how far to extend that yellow, considering all the angles to the walls.

Since the main floor is open-concept with interesting angles and shared walls, I reached the point of not being sure where I wanted creamy yellow to end and sage green to begin.

PAINT SAMPLES

Not sure how to tie it all together, I picked samples of our current creamy yellow and tea green with some new hues to paint on the various walls for consideration.

The blue tape marks the current creamy yellow and tea greens used elsewhere in the house.

btw we got a new tv, with a new wiring system through the walls to connect to the cable hookup in the basement.

After all, we’ve learned that colors display differently from morning to night as the light fades in and out.

Although I loved all the various colors, we didn’t feel positive enough about any of them to pick one.

While we puzzled over that, we turned our attention to some gardening.

NEW BUSHES

Only one lovely medium sized bush under our living rooms didn’t make sense, so we bought two more.

We planted one on each side of the existing bush.

Not sure if the little ones will ever catch up to the larger bush, but we don’t want them to grow larger than the bottom of the windows, so hopefully this will work.

NEW CREPE MYRTLE

Looking forward to the day they’ll one day shade the living room from the setting sun, I’m especially excited that we planted a new crepe myrtle at the corner of the house.

NEW URNS

After securing two lovely black French Country urns to coordinate with our black shutters, I found some lovely flowers to plant in the urns.

When I lived in the brutal arid heat of Texas, I had a certain set of go-to flowers.

Since Virginia varies from heat to cool fronts with frequent rain, there are many more options to consider.

For my flower urns I seek flowers with different characteristics: one that grows tall, a second that spreads out, and a third that drapes.

For height I decided to experiment with calla lily in shades of white to deep pinkish-purple.

To fill out the urn, I chose red and white geraniums.

Providing drape might be this blue flower I’ve lost the tag for.

I also bought a second drooping flower, these white and pink trailing roses.

I’m liking the results, so now it’s time for a break.

We’re off to Colonial Williamsburg to see our first Under the Redcoat weekend.
