My Son’s hoplite rewrite for Magnum Opus Literary Magazine

June 12, 2008

Recently, Institute for Excellence in Writing announced the onset of a literary magazine for students who write a true magnum opus! (Latin for “great work”)

Encouraging students to choose one piece of writing at the end of each year to rewrite to perfection, IEW will publish selected pieces for their new literary magazine, Magnum Opus.

After my kids each selected their favorite papers, they submitted them to IEW for the Magnum Opus literary magazine.

WORKING WITH THE EDITOR

A few weeks ago, my son received snail mail from IEW regarding his submission to Magnum Opus!

Marking suggestions for improvement, the editor told him how much she enjoyed his paragraph on early Greek Spartans that he wrote for our studies on Ancient Greece.

The editor queried: Would he consider rewriting it with her suggestions for future publication?

In the process of rewriting for the editor, my son learned lots of valuable lessons in how to tighten his writing, which absolutely thrilled me!

Also, the professional manner in which IEW handled this, like a publishing house, taught volumes to my kids.

Even though I’m already a huge fan of IEW, this professionalism impressed me all the more.

What a wonderful way to show kids what to expect as adults!

The article has been strengthened and resubmitted.

Now we wait.

Stay tuned!
