Now that we were in a home where we were free to paint the walls, we decorated my daughter’s bedroom to be a fun place. That included sewing a new quilt to fit the theme: flower garden.
After pouring through fabric options and quilt books, we decided to follow the instructions for a Double Irish Chain Quilt from The Quilt Maker’s Gift. We had seen this book featured on HGTV’s Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. We had the story book and both sewing books.
Then we chose a light pink with light sage floral for the feature fabric that would harmonize with the walls of her newly painted room (stay tuned for that).
I also found a stash of tone-on-tone florals in both pink and purple, which would coordinate with the feature fabric. They would pop out and give a bit of life to the quilt.
This was my most adventurous quilt yet, which went quite well.
I rotary cut the parts and machine stitched them. After assembling the quilt layers I put them in a big round hoop to take with me on the road. We were driving to Houston for our family vacation in 2005 which allowed me lots of riding in the car time to knock out hand stitching.
I hand stitched a cross hatch which was super easy to do since all the squares were lined up. I used 1/8″ inch masking tape to line up all the corners of all the blocks for each stitching section so I could easily hand stitch along the tape.
Here is a close up of the hand stitching as seen from the front:
