Discovering ph levels of Leaf Pigmentation in Biology I

June 1, 2011

In my son’s ninth grade biology lab, today, he performed an oft repeated process for different science classes with Dr. Jay Wile…boiling red cabbage leaves.

It’s amazing all the scientific things we can learn from that!

This time, he was boiling the leaves to learn about leaf pigmentation.

Specifically, he’s observing how anthocyanins change color at different ph levels.

After boiling the ever-popular lab specimen, red cabbage leaves in water, he extracted the pigments which change color when he adds acids or bases…reflected in the different colors in the various beakers, which changed from green to pink then back to green again.

TEAMWORK

Meanwhile, he was helping his sister, working behind him, with her physics lab…which will be the next post.

GREAT KITCHEN SPACE FOR LABS

I really love using my new kitchen, with its amazing space and layout, access to sink and protective countertops, and terrific lighting, for our science labs.

So much room to spread out and work together!
