Effect of Temperature on Solubility of Gas in Chemistry I

May 15, 2012

My son has had another amazing year studying science with Dr. Jay Wile, this year with Chemistry I.

Surrounded by all the beakers and test tubes with variations of liquids, boiling and freezing, I again felt a bit like Inga as I took photos and listened to my son’s explanation of the process.

Today’s experiment involves something that sounds quite complex: the effect of temperature on the solubility of a gas.

Humorously, my son grabbed Inga’s my floral oven mitt to protect his hands from boiling water. (header photo)

The beaker is full of near boiling water and the test tube is full of soda pop, which is now releasing its carbonate.

The graduated cylinder is full of ice water causing the soda pop to stop losing its carbonate.

Here he’s repeating the process.
