Charcoal Sketching Art Lessons

July 29, 2008

Born an artist, my son can draw nearly anything.

However my daughter and I needed some help.

Thankfully a friend lent an extra copy of her CD of The Phonics of Drawing after I mentioned how impressed I was from her kids’ experiences on her blog posts.

Glad to test drive the CD before spending the last of my homeschool budget, I quickly discovered its value and bought my own copy.

Using charcoal to practice different shapes, with our hands held in a certain way, taught us best tips for this using this new (to us) medium.

Providing not only a thorough supply list for our new art supplies, the CD even suggested the tape to secure the paper to the desk.

Learning about perspective reminded us of our Renaissance studies about Leonardo da Vinci last year.

Then we learned about light and shadow while drawing teddy bears…

My son’s teddy bear light and shadow sketch is in the blog post header.

After spending our summer trying out the first lessons, I am even more impressed.

This CD helps the budding artist at any level of the journey, as evidenced with our recognizable bears.

Even though my son is an artist, my daughter and I are not, so we were elated that our pictures are at least recognizable!

There are many more lessons to go that we plan to continue pursuing.
