Inspired by one of the books he read, my son pretended to keep a journal while on the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Beautifully photographed, Lewis and Clark: Voices on the Trail detailed the flora and fauna Lewis and Clark saw.
Choosing his favorite animals as entry topics, he used IEW Unit 7 to creatively write these historic entries in first person narrative.
After cleaning up the rough drafts, he typed them with special font, one per page.
Then we printed each page onto parchment paper.
Referencing Lewis and Clark: Voices on the Trail, he sketched and colored a rendering under each entry.
Only after he ran out of time to do more entries, he wrote an introduction to his journal, then trimmed the pages to journal size.
Then he bound all the papers together by stitching them together, similar to what he observed at the Colonial Williamsburg book binder.
At the end, he glued suede fabric onto the cover of his journal and titled it.
