Presenting Ruth (my daughter), Deborah from Judges (me), and a Phoenician merchant (my son) of purple dye, who came to know the one true God through some Hebrews he met while on a trading expedition.
In preparation for their parts, my kids used IEW’s Unit 1 on Public Speaking to organize their thoughts, practice their speech, and use great eye contact.
After we introduced ourselves and told a bit of our story, we ate a feast the ancients would have enjoyed.
My daughter made a list of foods she found in the Bible (from Joshua through the reign of King David) and other books we read. This list became our shopping list.
To decorate the table, we laid some of the foods and spices in their raw form around the dishes for our ancient feast.
After we ate, my kids took the guests on a tour through our museum of the various ancient cultures we had studied.
My kids painted frescoes like Minoans:
My kids also especially enjoyed creating ancient bronze art, and creating purple dye “like” the Phoenicians.
Again our audience was amazed at all the kids had learned. The kids and I were also amazed at all we’ve been learning through our classical study of history at the dialectic level.
Read, think, write is all it takes. Integration of the subjects are exponential in learning. These basic components were becoming more solid as we advanced through our studies.
Everyone is looking forward to our next history presentation, which will be the Classical Greeks!
