A Fancy Party Dress amidst Christmas Preparations

December 26, 2015

Although it’s been another busy year, I’m thankful to be active, since I slept through most of last December with a mystery illness the doctor had difficulty pegging.

It took six months to heal and feel like myself again.

CHRISTMAS TREE FARM

As per our usual custom, we ventured to Evergreen Acres the day after Thanksgiving, to find our Christmas tree.

While the kids decorated the tree, I decorated the house.

Still inspired by Pret-a-Papier, I always have a historic gown I’ve sewn on display in the dining room. 😉

When the kids were finished with the tree, I arranged the Christmas village and train underneath the tree, a tradition from my childhood that I always loved.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG CHRISTMAS

Then we took our annual Christmas trip to Colonial Williamsburg the earliest we’ve ever done, on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

With so many pressing matters in December, this day trip was all we could work in.

Happily we saw some of the Christmas wreaths out on the buildings, which is always a cheerful sight.

SEWING A CHRISTMAS DRESS

Then I sewed a 1957 party dress for a festive Christmas party at a country club I attended, where I received lots of compliments on my dress.

BAKING TREATS

During all the busy, I worked in a bit of baking, but forgot to take pictures of most of the cooking.

However I did take a few process photos of the dark chocolate fudge with macadamia nuts that I make every year.

While shopping for ingredients for my fruitcake, I resorted to a different type of mincemeat since my favorite from Borden couldn’t be found anywhere.

With the Borden version, the fruitcake is amazingly moist and tasty, but with this version it wasn’t quite as good.

YORKSHIRE PUDDING

For Christmas I usually cook a roast beef dinner with yorkshire pudding, a favorite from my childhood that the kids really like, too.

It’s my version of an Old English Christmas.

Well, this year, the yorkshire pudding looked so amazing, I rushed to take a picture of it…and it’s the only picture I have of our dinner. lol

MOVIES

For the remainder of the week leading into New Year’s, we’ll likely play lots of games by day and watch Christmas/New Year’s Eve combo movies each night…can’t get enough of it. 😉

Then we’ll culminate the season with our annual game night on New Year’s Eve…maybe whenever the kids come home from work late.

Now that they both work, on top of college, time is rare to gather for games and going places, but we do our best!

As much as I miss the old days, I’m happy that my kids are growing up to find their own lives…a goal I remember enjoying at their age.
