The Incredible, Inflatable, Deflatable Egg in Biology I

December 8, 2008

My daughter did a fascinating experiment about osmosis last week, using an egg, vinegar, karo corn syrup, and distilled water in her Biology I science study with Dr. Jay Wile.

First, my daughter took an egg from the refrigerator and put it in a cup full of vinegar to sit for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, the shell dissolved and the egg inflated by 1/2″!

On the left is a regular egg from the refrigerator and on the right is the inflated egg.

After rinsing the wiggly egg, she measured and recorded the circumference…

Then she put the egg in a cup full of karo corn syrup, leaving that to sit for 24 hours.

Imagine our shock when we discovered this!

She carefully took it out, rinsed it, and measured the circumference, which was now much smaller than before.

Then she placed it in a cup of distilled water for 24 hours, after which we found the egg had plumped up again!

That was a lot more interesting than my high school experiment with dialysis tubing!
