My first quilting class was with a summer phase homemaking course that I took after my Freshman year of high school, for extra credit. Along with learning intricate stitches for needlepoint, I also learned some quilting.
We stitched by hand, from beginning to end, two different 12-inch square projects: a pillow and a wall hanging. The pillow was patchwork while the wall hanging was applique.
Then I purposed to sew a bed-sized quilt…which finally happened when my daughter graduated from a crib to a bed.
I had been watching the Fons and Porter quilt shows on PBS while the kids napped on Saturday afternoons. I bought their encyclopedic book, Quilter’s Complete Guide, which today is falling apart from much reference.
I chose the Rail Fence block so I would not have to match seams.
I found some pretty floral fabrics to rotary cut, and machine stitch, then I arranged them on the bias before stitching the blocks together. From a yard sale purchase I had yards of cute eyelet lace that I sewed to the edge of the quilt. Then I simply string tied the layers of fabric and batting together.
