Sewing Autumnal Blue Ridge and Pumpkin Quilt Tops

November 1, 2021

Shortly after moving into my apartment last autumn, I happily began working in my new little sewing room filled with bright lights.

AUTUMNAL BLUE RIDGE QUILT

Beginning with an autumnal quilt, I categorized all the golds, russets, greens, and purples from my fabric stash.

My sewing room bedroom at the apartment

While working in this small apartment, I soon missed my large dining room table to cut my fabric strips.

Resorting to using the wood floor to lay out completed blocks into rows, I quickly missed my wall to wall carpeting, which was more comfortable on the knees when kneeling on the floor, and also much warmer.

I also missed the ability to stab pins through my fabric into the wall to wall carpet to secure it.

Needing a way to audition quilt pieces, I purchased several yards of wide felt to hang on one wall of my sewing room.

That was helpful, only to a degree, because only small fabric strips and blocks stick to the felt.

By the time I put up rows on the felt, they kept falling off, so I had to use the wooden floor, which wasn’t easy, especially as the quilt grew in my small space.

As the quilt grew larger, I liked the blocks less, so I ripped out the fabric strips that were taking over the effect of the quilt, and began again to achieve a better blending of fabrics for an impressionistic effect.

Called away to other projects, I puttered on the quilt here and there until it was finally finished at the end of September of this year, which I set aside to hand quilt next autumn, and happily pursued sewing pumpkin quilts.

GIANT PUMPKIN QUILT

For my next fabric stash quilt busting project, I created a giant pumpkin quilt, the strips of which can be seen on my felt wall in the photo below.

Since this was a quick quilt top to complete, I set it aside to hand quilt next season, then began another one.

PUMPKIN PATCH QUILT

Since I have little floor space to lay out fabric for large quilts, I sewed this cute pumpkin patch quilt, again from my fabric stash, which I’ll hand quilt next autumn.

Meanwhile, I have a hand quilting project in process on the couch, that I pick up to stitch when watching movies.

Throughout these projects, I strategized solutions with my son, which I shall share in a future post.
