Properly Dressed Gingerbread Cookies from 1608 to 1823

December 22, 2011

While decorating the gingerbread cookies, my son ensured that a few of the gingerbread men had historically accurate clothing from the years 1608 to 1823.

Obviously my son has been influenced by my historical sewing since he and his sister asked for historically accurate clothing after we first moved here two years ago.

While spending a lot of time at Colonial Williamsburg, we also spend much of that time researching at the milliner and tailor shops.

When my kids were asked to take Flat Stanley for a stroll through Colonial Williamsburg, my son ensured he was properly dressed for the experience.

The fellow in the photo below is from the year 1610.

That touch of blue at the knee is just like Lord De La Warre’s whom we saw arrive in Jamestown last summer for a reenactment of when he returned the colony to working order.

Thanks to A Visit from St. Nicholas, published in 1823, a new fashion statement was created for Santa Claus.
