I have finally completed my pocket from my class over a year ago at the Colonial Williamsburg Costume Design Center!
Finally finishing my project might have happened because I finally have a costume.
I’ve been working all day on all the final touches to accessorize the costume.
After giving us the history of pockets, our instructor encouraged us to be imperfect in our sewing of the pocket.
She showed us many extant examples of sloppy patchwork, piecework, and lopsidedness.
Therefore, I chose a chintz from the fabric stash of past made costumes for CW interpreters.
I liked the colors in this chintz a lot.
I used a cream silk for the lining and back and a teal silk for binding the pocket opening.
At the instructor’s encouragement, I drew my pocket freehand without an attempt for symmetry.
Never having work 18th century attire, I had no idea what size I wanted.
There were a variety of options for us in sewing the pocket together.
Trying something new, I opted to make French seams on the outer edges to bind all the layers together.
Then I hand sewed the teal silk onto the pocket opening, which is where I picked it up this morning.
Finally, I attached the twill tape to tie it around my waist.
