New furniture arrival for homeschool room and kitchen

New furniture arrival for homeschool room and kitchen

May 16, 2009

During the eighteen days of securing the keys from the real estate agent, moving in to the house, unpacking moving boxes, painting the pink mocha basement, visiting Colonial Williamsburg for a day, painting my son’s bedroom, painting my daughter’s bedroom, and painting the powder room, we shopped for new furniture!

Leaving behind furniture we could have used

Leaving behind our French Country kitchen island table in Texas was heartbreaking, because I totally loved that piece as it was so gorgeous and versatile.

Simply a piece of furniture, that can be moved, the problem was it’s size.

Though perfect for the Texas kitchen, it would not have fit in this one.

However, I would have totally incorporated it into the basement, for my sewing/artistic space!

Speaking of which, we also left our newly built bookcase and desk unit in Texas since the odds of it fitting another house was slim.

However that also would have fit perfectly in the basement to function for homeschool stuff, even my sewing desk.

The kids graduate in a few years, so planning for the years beyond come more to mind than they used to.

Except if I do anything artistic in the art space, I need much better lighting.

In between unpacking and painting, we shopped for new furniture.

Happily we received a few deliveries this week, enabling me to unpack more boxes.

New bookcases for the homeschool room

Most importantly, we needed bookcases for our prodigious volume of homeschool books.

Yes, we really read these books! =)

It’s difficult to see in the photos, but these French Country bookcases have curved moulding on the top and bottom edges, and the backs are beadboard.

The black paint has a bit of a rustic effect, which contrasts beautifully against the creamy yellow.

Enthusiastically I unpacked our books as soon as these were assembled.

However, I’ve been going out of my mind, trying to figure out the order to the books.

Since they are for homeschool, covering the history of the world from the beginning of time to the present, I don’t remember where some of the books fall into sequence.

This has always been a problem, but en masse is insane, so I’m now determined to dot my books chronologically.

To organize these books so I can find them again, I’ve sat on the floor with my laptop to search for dates for the topics covered, which I then lightly pencil inside the front cover.

Although I’m nearly done, I need to buy dots to finish the organization to expedite things in the future.

New file cabinets

Now that we have the file cabinets, I can finally unpack more boxes.

The rest of the homeschool space

Around the corner my daughter’s desk sits, next to the lone bookcase we brought with us from Texas.

That holds the more general volumes that we often reference in our studies.

On the other side of the room is my son’s desk. I prefer to keep the kids apart, since they like to tease each other.

Also this way each has access to their own set of electrical outlets for their computers.

To the left of this photo are the doorways for the basement bedroom and bathroom, then a hallway to the basement storage closet.

Viewed from my daughter’s desk, is a nook near my son’s desk where I’d like to have shelving installed for homeschool supplies and board games.

Some of these things are just stuff in the middle of the floor are from the previous homeowner that haven’t yet made it out the door.

Other things are waiting for me to find a home for in the homeschool room, etc.

We’ve ordered a sleeper sofa to place under the window, but that is on back order for several weeks.

I also need my own desk, also on back order.

Sewing Civil War in the family room

Meanwhile a peek at the family room, where I’m sewing Civil War gowns and hoop skirts.

I was hoping to simply buy hoop skirts at the bridal shop, but they don’t have any.

With our next Becoming History presentation coming soon, I thought I’d whip some up, but I don’t have the boning right, despite trying different types.

New kitchen table

Presenting our new kitchen table that perfectly fits this small eating space, where the living room wall is just to the right.

I absolutely love this French Country green table and matching chairs!

The pop of red, however, is a bit much for me.

However, as a compromise, it’s not too bad, since the cushioned chairs are French Country and floral.

We’ll see if I adapt and fall in love with the red or not!

Funny how the table blends in with the green walls, which will soon be painted creamy yellow to brighten up this dark room.

And with that, we’re taking a break from all the work to enjoy our first Drummer’s Call at Colonial Williamsburg!
