Homeschool Room Remodel: Texas-French Hill Country House

December 20, 2008

An opportunity arose last September to remodel the homeschool room, so I happily said yes!

Having accumulated lots of informative books, important paperwork, and useful accessories for teaching, I enthusiastically planned my dream French Country homeschool room with a touch of Texas.

Loving our loft area, I coordinated all the elements of French Country from the rest of the house.

Needing to negotiate all the twists and turns from outdoors, through the foyer, up the stairs, into the loft, I helped.

This section that we hauled up in September will be the giant U-shaped desk for me to spread out while teaching.

I selected this faux crinkled leather counter top, custom ordered from Lowes to fit the U-shape. Highly durable and easy to clean, it brings the Touch of Texas to the space.

The completed file drawers allowed lots of paper organization for both household and homeschooling to finally occur!

We utilized every nook and cranny, inside and out.

Often used supplies like microscopes will go into this niche under my desk, easily accessible by the kids.

By November this bookshelf from one of Norm Abrams’ designs (of This Old House and New Yankee Workshop) was completed.

Originally it had a cherry stain that never took well, so I redesigned it with a chocolate interior with creamy white surround.

Then lots of baskets to store lots of useful bits and pieces.

By the end of the year the wall unit and desk were completed.

I love this practical U-shaped desk/wall unit that utilizes every square inch!

The CPU stored here, with a fan in back of the unit and decorative chicken wire in front for ventilation.

Making History Live

With less than six years left of homeschool (yikes where did the time go?) I already have future plans for this space.

My teacher desk will become a dedicated sewing desk!

The other end of the room will hold dreamy crinkled brown leather furniture in this lovely library!

I love what our house has become from all our remodels, and I love that it is so practical too!
