Millinery petticoats and short cloak: Colonial Williamsburg

October 9, 2011

On our recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg for Prelude to Victory, I visited the milliner shop to look at all the pretty assortments.

The milliner kindly addressed many questions I had about petticoats, including the prequilted one she was wearing, as well as about some quilted in the shop.

Of special interest to me was the sheer plaid organza short cloak, now that I’ve completed sewing a short cloak.

Upon my many queries, the short cloak was brought to the countertop for us to analyze while looking at more closely.

An entire assortment of ladies’ caps with variations of ribbons and ruffles were fun to inspect.

On another day we witnessed the trimming of this gorgeous beribboned hat.

When I saw the sewing of this bed gown, I asked lots of questions, which the mantua maker happily answered. It’s such a fun look for the 18th century.

Then I got to see close-up the gorgeous embroidery of this dimity petticoat, a project I’d like to pursue, myself.

I came away with many more inspirations and ideas for sewing projects.
