Last night was awards night for my kids’ Awana Club.
MY SON AWARDED JOURNEY BOOK 2 PIN
In each year of high school, the clubbers read 1/4 of the Bible and give summaries of each of the books of the Bible they read.
This year they read Exodus, Numbers, Judges, I and II Samuel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, Micah, Obadiah, Haggai, Mark, Romans, Philippians, Philemon, James, Jude and Revelation.
My son is on pace for his Citation Award, eight books down, two to go!
SPEECHES FROM THE PARENTS
Something else new came up at the last minute this year, when the high school leadership asked the parents to say a few words to the entire audience in 60 seconds.
Taking the microphone, I looked for my daughter in the audience to tell her: Great job!
Then addressing the audience, I said: C________’s first venture into Awana club was in 4-year-old Cubbies where she cried.
Everyone went: Awwww.
I continued: She did not return until 4th grade with T&T when it went much better. Every time we picked her up, she talked constantly about club. Now when she comes home, she talks constantly not only about club, but also about being a Leader in Training (LIT). We moved here from Texas three years ago, so thank you to everyone who played a part in listening to her verses and allowing her to do LIT. It was a growing experience for her and LIT allowed her to give back by helping the younger ones learn their verses and get passed on them.
Looking again at my daughter I said: Just because you’re graduating from Awana doesn’t mean you can put your Bible study and Scripture memory to the side. Now you have the tools to carry on in hiding God’s word in your heart to encourage yourself and others.
I think she liked my little talk because she was grinning the whole time.
CITATION AWARD
Last night she received her Citation Award.
This is given to graduating seniors IF they complete the requirements of doing one handbook a year for 10 years, from grades 3-12.
In those handbooks she had to memorize scripture and complete projects. In high school she had to also read the entire Bible and give summaries on each book of the Bible, do community service (nursing home, LIT, and even answering questions for guests to Colonial Williamsburg counted!)
Additionally, she had to attend seminars on religious topics, where again Colonial Williamsburg counted for all the times she met 18th century preachers.
With all of that work and nearly 1000 verses of Scripture memorized over the years, she received the Citation Award, for which some colleges grant scholarships.
Hopefully she can use her scholarship when she attends university after junior college, since the junior college refuses it.
As she walked across the stage, unbeknownst to me as I was snapping pictures, her graduation picture was shown over the stage from the photo op two days before.
LAFAYETTE 1825 STEPPING STONE
After the ceremony we went to the Lafayette stepping, stone down the hill, for pictures.
STRAWBERRY MOON
On the way to the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate, a Strawberry Moon loomed largely in the sky, perfect for my daughter, who’s favorite flavor is strawberries!
