Because he has a naturally inquisitive mind, I let my son loose on science projects.
I first learned this idea after reading Charlotte Mason and other classical education books.
To keep up with the pace I buy lots of science kits for my son’s birthday and Christmas gifts.
To him opening a gift is a peak into what he’ll do in homeschool.
Each week my son chooses one of his science kits, then we find books and videos to coordinate the study.
Recently he built a model engine from a Smithsonian science kit.
Additionally he watched a Magic Schoolbus episode about engines that I had taped when he was a toddler.
After the video my son dug deeper with his sister’s old 6th grade A Beka science book, which has a section about engines.
Then he wrote a KWO, which he learned from IEW, to prepare his thoughts in an organized way to give me a 5 minute demonstration of how engines work.
Finally he entered a summary about engines in his science journal.
Maybe I should sew a lab coat for him, so he can do videos of his projects.
