While we were at the Focus on the Family’s huge bookstore, I was perusing some fascinating options, when I overheard an odd sound.
I was shocked! My kids were watching a goofy guy on a large screen tv, who was in front of the Eiffel Tower talking about croissants while the camera focused on his…teeth? His teeth were huge! He had geeky glasses which the camera angles played up.
Um…how does this teach about the Eiffel Tower?
I turned to the pile of DVDs near the large screen. Drive Thru History: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient Turkey, and Asia Minor.
Hmmm, we’ve studied the first two at the end of last school year and will study the next two when we start this school year in a few weeks. There is also a set about the Patriots who shaped America.
Looking back at the tv, I saw that the host was now dressed in colonial attire, sort of like Washington or Jefferson, but with a contemporary look, a day’s growth of beard, and a very short haircut. (gasp)
When we toured the Focus on the Family facilities, the tour guide raved about Drive Thru History, promising that it was an excellent resource, especially for homeschoolers.
On top of all that, Drive Thru History is one of the newest projects sponsored by Focus on the Family in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer.
Last night we watched the first one in the series, which proved to be a great review of last year’s studies on Ancient Greece.
Although full of light-hearted banter, it had a thorough review of everything we had learned last year, both historically and Scripturally.
It was so neat to see everything in visual context and movement…especially through the theme of which car Dave Stotts, the host, rents for his adventures in Greece.
Quite possibly our favorite part was when Stotts complained about all the switchbacks he drove to get to the top of the hills in Greece.
After driving in the mountains of Colorado, we knew all about switchback roads! One big difference, though, is that Stotts had guardrails; we didn’t. 😉
I am now hooked on Drive thru History. Think we’ll drive through Ancient Rome, tomorrow night!
