Driving adventurous-lee with our GPS often takes us into Hatley and McCoy territory, dead ending in the middle of nowhere on a mystery person’s property.
En route to Harpers Ferry, the GPS took us along a scenic twisty-turny backroad, through gorgeously lush green fields of corn, dotted with barns and silos, into the small town of Purcellville.
Fascinated with everything I saw, I watched every site pass by when suddenly I couldn’t believe my eyes!
I’ve seen that huge building numerous times in newsletters and the internet!
We were at Patrick Henry College!
First following Michael Farris
While living in Texas I’ve followed Constitutional lawyer Michael Farris since I first heard him on Focus on the Family so long ago, I’m not sure when it was…early 1990’s?
Ever since, I’ve been on his snail mail list, which over time became emails, keeping informed of the latest happenings, and ideas.
Joining Home School Legal Defense Association
Meanwhile we entered the world of homeschooling, so I joined Farris’ previous idea, the Homeschool Legal Defense Association.
Encouraged by Homeschool Heartbeat
Every day I’d listen to the daily radio show, Homeschool Heartbeat, with either Michael Farris or Michael Smith hosting.
This short program, averaging 5-15 minutes, was a major resource for me.
Founding of Patrick Henry College
Then one day in 1998, I received a newsletter informing me of his latest idea…Patrick Henry College, a liberal arts Christian college.
Opening in 2000, HSLDA moved into PHC.
Meanwhile we continued to follow them, gleaning ideas from all their wonderful resources.
We move from Texas to Northern Virginia
Then last year we moved to Northern Virginia, and exactly where the college was in proximity to our new home (apart from looking at a map).
And now the GPS brought us here even though we routed it for Harpers Ferry!
The kids were excited because we’ve always talked about the possibilities. What if the kids could attend?
Stay tuned!
