Choo Choo Colorado Appliqued Quilt for my Son’s Birthday

July 18, 2007

After painting the walls of my sons room to look like the Colorado Rockies, I knew he’d like a quilt to match.

I couldn’t find any patterns I liked on-line, so I designed my own.

Using some of the same techniques I did for creating the mural, I created all the parts of the applique, which I then machine stitched and appliqued onto the quilt.

Drawing the appliqued shapes I desired onto freezing paper, I ironed those onto my choice of fabrics, then cut them out.

Layering them one by one, I built the appliqued layers with fusible adhesive for durability.

Then I finished off the edges with my sewing machine.

Once that was completed, I machine-quilted the batting/fabric layers together with a cross-hatch design to replicate train tracks.

It was pretty simple to make, taking only a week to put together.

It has been very well used and worn over the years, so I’m glad I used fusible interfacing and machine-stitching.
