The key to one’s future is knowing how to read, which is the foundation of a classical education. Here are some things we did to help my struggling daughter.
My happy first grade memories recall reciting the pledge and singing a patriotic anthem while holding the American flag high at the beginning of the school day.
Since my daugter struggled with learning to read, due to undiagnosed vision issues, I found real books more helpful than the regimen of the pithy textbooks.
As I flipped through the pages I was quite impressed. Beautifully illustrated, the book told far more of Squanto’s story than I had ever heard.
Even though we began our homeschool years with a box set from A Beka, I began a habit of completely rewriting everything that came out of the box.
Learning phonics was a struggle for my daughter, who had undiagnosed vision issues.
I taught her phonics by using several tricks out of my collegiate tool bag.
Counseled by my daughter’s occupational therapist to teach her cursive, not print, in kindergarten, I learned lots of tips that wroked beautifully.
Beginning our homeschool journey with the support of our pediatrician, when everyone else voiced concerns.
Our journey through Sensory Processing Disorder with the help of our occupational therapist, her therapy dog, and horseback therapy riding.
