When my kids were quite young, I discovered a newly published book about Squanto in the Christian bookstore.
As I flipped through the pages I quickly decided to buy the book. Beautifully illustrated, the book told far more of Squanto’s story than I had ever heard.
Although I rarely bought new books back then, I bought this book.
Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas soon became our favorite Thanksgiving book.
It tells not only the beloved story that I adored as a little girl, but also reveals much of the untold story of Squanto.
I learned that his life was far more complex than previous books had let on.
Kidnapped into slavery, he was mercifully purchased by a monk in Spain who taught him about God.
When a ship became available, the monk sent Squanto home to America, via England.
But there were delays.
It would be another five years before he returned home.
Five years later, finally…home.
Home at long last…
Except…everyone had died…
Now what?
This book is a must have for the young children in your home. It will be a keeper for generations to come.
It’s one we’ve often enjoyed during read-aloud time, especially during Thanksgiving.
