Becoming a Science Whiz with Dr. Jay Wile

December 10, 2008

My son has enjoyed Dr. Wile’s General Science curriculum so much, that he has added additional work via Dr. Wile’s website.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

When my son completes a science lesson early, he goes to the web site to try to answer Dr; Wile’s Question of the Week.

For the first few weeks he received e-mails from Dr. Wylie, kindly telling him that his answers to the Question of the Week were wrong, while  encouraging him to keep trying.

These questions are not easy.

At least not to me, ahem, who took honors college prep science classes in high school.

My son likes to forward these to me so I can try to answer them. Hmmmm…..

NOT EASY

Situation: Here’s one of them: Suppose you are sitting down to a spicy dinner made by someone who knows a bit about chemistry. She tells you that she has made two spicy-hot entrees for you: one with a spice that has a lot of fat-soluble chemicals and one with a spice that has very few fat-soluble chemicals. She wants you to tell her which entrée contains which type of spice.
Question: Using only what you have at the dinner table, how would you identify which entrée has which spice?

Um, I had no idea.

My son, however, said he submitted the following answer: mix both entrees with a fatty food item on the plate SEPARATELY and then see which tastes the spiciest.

He was correct!

Then he correctly answered the questions for the next two weeks!

PRIZES

The student who gets the most correct answers in a 12 week period gets to choose a cool prize!

I love all the wonderful textbooks and aids Dr. Wile gives the students to help them study and understand and love science, no matter what their future goals are.

This is exactly the boost my son needed for his highly inquisitive mind.

Now he’s applying much of what he’s learned in life and even at science exhibits at museums, like the Witte in San Antonio. (seen in the header photo above).
