And then we joined my daughter (C) and her family to celebrate the birthday of her hubby (A).
I was so glad to have extra time with Little Miss M (my granddaughter), since I spent most of the summer helping with her little cousin.
HOTEL VIEW
The view from our hotel room was so ocean-esque 24/7, we left the doors open whenever we were there.
My best night shot…
BOARDWALK
So different from the Outer Banks, just to the south, this beach has a boardwalk with a row of hotels and restaurants opposite the ocean, with busy city streets in front of them.
Since my daughter and her family stayed in the hotel next to ours, it was quite simple to meet up on the boardwalk for great eats and such.
LAKESIDE
At the window near our elevator on the floor of our room was this great view of more water opposite the ocean.
AQUARIUM
We visited the aquarium together…
My favorite was watching this creature come out of his shell to eat!
The jellyfish aquariums lit with lights that changed colors from minute to minute…
TAUTOG’S RESTAURANT
Endeavoring to find vintage charm on our first trip to Virginia Beach, we nailed it upon our discovery of Tautog’s Restaurant, a cute 1920s beach house quaintly styled as a coastal dining experience.
Keeping the historic charm of the original structure, this family run business adds a personal touch of friendly and efficient service.
While sitting on the porch on a moonlight night, we were bathed in the atmospheric lights strung about the property.
Our delicious food and amazing wine was uniquely topped by one of the wait staff who regaled us with fascinating details of the historic story of how different the view looked in the 1920s from our porch seating.
Completely intrigued by the atmosphere, we toured the inside then walked around the property to continue enjoying the ambiance after dinner.
I highly recommend this spot.

DROWNING
The next morning while playing on the beach, far away from the water, a large wave rolled ashore, wiping out my daughter’s phone.
Thankfully that is all that happened, but while walking to one of the shops later, I saw evidence of another wave that came up higher to the boardwalk…leaving a pool of water.
That evening three men were caught by rip tides, so a massive search and rescue ensued all through the night.
Unfortunately they drowned, washing ashore later that week.
While all the news outlets proclaimed that the red flags were out…I have no idea where.
BLUE ANGELS
After we all enjoyed lunch on the pier (in the above photo) we enjoyed the Blue Angels flying for their nearby air show.
