When I finished sewing my daughter’s 18th century gown with period accurate blue fabric, my daughter asked me to finish her 18th century lavender jacket.
Although I reminded her that the fabric wasn’t period accurate, she didn’t care.
She really wants it because it’s lavender!
Since this lavender floral toile hints at some blue-on-blue floral toiles I’ve seen in Colonial Williamsburg costuming, I purchased some last December for my daughter’s Christmas gift.
Starting the jacket last April, I soon put it aside when my daughter struggled with the stomacher and pins during fittings.
When I dug it out from the project basket, I was pleased that after the last fitting I had left in the pins securing the fitted shoulder straps.
After I finished stitching down the shoulder straps, I sewed the eyelets. Done!
Then I finished hand sewing her lavender petticoat last night.
She loves the outfit and keeps saying, “Oh it’s so pretty. I love the colors. They go well together.” =)
My favorite part is the perkiness of the swallowtails in the back, as seen in the header photo.
The ribbon obviously needs to be replaced, since this is a bit too short.
The jacket could probably use a few tucks in the neckline too.
During the photo shoot I noticed that the sleeves are too long. uh oh!
Surely a nip and a tuck here and there will do the trick, but I’m not quite sure how to do that just yet.
I don’t know if I have time to fix them, because she is planning on wearing the jacket this weekend during Prelude to Victory weekend at Colonial Williamsburg.
I am hoping to whip out a couple of other nearly finished projects from the sewing basket before this weekend. 😉
After the photo shoot she thanked me profusely for the new costume, while she daintily touched and admired it she repeated, “It’s so pretty. The colors are nice. They all go so nicely together.”
I’m glad she loves it. After all, it is lavender!
