Painting a bloody bathroom sage green for a garden theme
French Country House - Virginia Lafayette Style

Painting a bloody bathroom sage green for a garden theme

May 15, 2009

Eighteen days after securing the keys from the real estate agent, moving in to the house, unpacking moving boxes, painting the pink mocha basement, visiting Colonial Williamsburg for a day, painting my son’s bedroom, and brightening the pale grey walls in my daughter’s bedroom, I turned my attention on the worst paint job in the house, a red sponge painted powder room.

Sponge painting is difficult

I’ve learned in my own experience that sponge painting is not easy, but this bathroom would have looked better as a solid red.

Although I’m excited to do that in the basement bathroom, I had a different vision for the main floor powder room.

Transforming to a garden theme

I wanted to replicate the powder room in my Texas house with another garden theme.

Still packed in one of the boxes were all my French Country birdhouses (from Hobby Lobby), cheerful pink and yellow daisies (from Hobby Lobby) in a green wrought iron basket (from Gruene), green petaled soap dispenser, garden chime, and white rustic metal hooks (from Gruene), along with French Country hardware.

They will transform this space!

Seventeen days after securing the keys from the real estate agent, moving in to the house, unpacking moving boxes, painting the pink mocha basement, and visiting Colonial Williamsburg for a day, and painting my son’s bedroom, and painting my daughter’s bedroom, I was ready to paint the powder room!

Prepping the walls

First I removed all the hardware, to give to Habit for Humanity.

Then I primed the walls, because this red was a deep red.

After priming, I played with a few green samples before I found one that seemed to work best.

This small paint job was easily knocked out in a full day!

Although I’d like a different mirror, to add to my garden theme, I replaced the original since it was okay.

It didn’t really add or detract from my garden theme.

Unpacking my garden themed accessories

Then I unpacked all my powder room garden accessories from my Texas house, and hung them up in the new powder room off the foyer.

Even though I’d like to change out the lighting, it’s not a priority project. So maybe someday…

Meanwhile, I now love this space!
