18th Century Cap with Purple Satin Ribbon: Sewing Journal

July 16, 2014

At last, I sewed for my daughter a proper lady’s cap, beribboned in her favorite color of purple, which shall look wonderful with all of her 18th century attire.

FABRIC

For the fabric, I used a 100% cotton windowpane fabric remnant from my Civil War reproduction gown and my 1930s blouse.

PATTERN

Using the Kannik Korner pattern for Women’s and Girls’ Caps from 1740-1820, I chose version A: Round Eared Cap with Split Ruffle Variation.

HANDSEWN

Sewing all of this by hand was easily enjoyed while watching favorite tv shoes.

I’m especially excited to have figured out the gathered whipped stitch, for which the fabric was quite cooperative!

The eyelet for the drawstring at the nape is super easy.

First, my daughter modeled the cap before I added the ribbon.

After I added her favorite satin ribbon (purple of course!) I took the final shots!
