When I heard the distinctive rumble of WWII aircraft, I called to my son to grab his camera and hurry outside.
Running outdoors, I saw several aircraft flying over the rooftops.
All I had was my cell phone and by the time I awakened it to take a photo, they were further away.
But my son took amazing photos which are now his to share since he’s trying to start a photography branding.
Dubbed Potomac Flight, twelve WWII planes flew from Culpeper to Washington DC to honor disabled American veterans.
Of the twelve planes, nine were North American T-6 Texans, two Douglas C-47s, and a Beechcraft C-45.
After a flying over Washington National Mall, the Pentagon, and Arlington National Cemetery, they returned to the Culpeper Air Fest, which organized this flyover.
While this video opens with their take-off from the Culpeper Air Fest, footage taken from a B-25 captures their stunning formationed flight over Washington DC, with colorful smoke coming from their tails.
Footage follows the planes back to Culpeper, where they again pour on the colorful smoke to the refrains of God Bless America.
What a cool experience!
Amazing how Bristow has been a crossroads during the Civil War, and even in these current days.
Living at the conjunction of busy street traffic at the entrance to the VRE to Washington DC, I didn’t realize what a great air space we had.
Along with the typical airplanes en route to Dulles (thankfully not noisy at all since we are far enough out for them to still be at higher altitudes), I’ve also seen the space shuttle flying piggy back on its carrier for display at the Udvar Hazy, the Snoopy MetLife blimp from the local PGA Tournament, and many other WWII plane sightings.
