The English Brothers Chuckwagon Musical Show in New Braunfels

February 22, 2009

Before leaving Texas, we visited one last Texas sightseeing stop that evoked Texas through and through.

Recommended by the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs

Recommended at our last visit to the Colorado Flying W Ranch Chuckwagon dinner, we drove to New Braunfels to a similar establishment.

Styled much like the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs, the English Brothers Canyon Trail Chuckwagon Supper Musical Show put their own Texas spin on being a cowboy.

In fact we saw one of the brothers, Wes English, perform in 2001 at the Flying W.

Now he’s bring the legendary style of Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers to Texas with his brothers.

Previously located elsewhere, this site recently opened.

Lots of lighthearted family style humor

Meeting us in the parking lot, one of English brothers greeted us and said he was the handsome one.

Then we went indoors and another brother assigned us terrific seats at the front table!

Then we met officially met Wes, who lives rather close to us.

While building this business, he’s the music pastor at Oak Hills Church, where Max Lucado pastors.

Learning how to Lasso Cattle

Then another brother took us outside to teach us how to lasso cattle!

My son started first.  It took him a while.  We learned a lot of appreciation of the guys in the rodeo!

Finally he got it!

Then my daughter tried.  After a couple of tries, woo hoo, she got it!

Uh oh, now it was my turn!

I had trouble the first couple of times.

He gave me a few more tips, and then I got the hang of twirling that rope.

I got so good with twirling through the air, I couldn’t figure out how to let go!

But one sure could hear it zing through the air!

Finally by my fourth attempt, I got the cow! (see header)

Overall, to our surprise, the gals got the cow quicker than the guys!

Having Fun before the Dinner and Music Show

Then we went inside to look at the animal collection that they and their dad caught over the years.

The brothers have plans to expand the preshow entertainment over time.

Chuckwagon Dinner

Finally the dinner started in typical Chuckwagon dinner style.

Like in Colorado Springs, it began with instructions of how to proceed down the food line efficiently, with tips of how to juggle the silverware, plate, and drink, with lots of great jokes!

After receiving a goodly portion of brisket, I moved my plate to the baked potato section, however Wes plopped more brisket on to my plate!

Was he trying to fatten me up? (I have lost thirteen pounds since Christmas, due to nerves and busy-ness with this move.)

This Texan plate of brisket surpassed the brisket at the Colorado Chuckwagon establishment, unless you get their steak.

It was the best BBQ I ever ate!  The brisket was tender and smoked.  The pinto beans, nicely spiced and flavored.  The biscuits were the most tender I’ve ever eaten and piping hot.  The applesauce, spiced with cinnamon.  Even the potato was great!  The spice cake, wonderfully spiced, moist, and flavorful.

The brothers served us, seated us, and refilled our drinks.

During dinner one of the brothers told funny stories while telling the history of Texas through the story of longhorns and cattle drives.

(At the Flying W they tell ranch stories.)

Cowboy Musical Show

Then they sang for us.  It was wonderful. Here’s a sample from their website.

They have a terrific range of skill on various stringed instruments.

Wes is the best yodeler in the West.

The jokes were funny!

We were sad when it was over an hour later.

At least now we can move from Texas in a cowboy mood.
