HISTORY
Built in 1913 in the Breaux Arts Style, The Virginian Hotel was a happening place on the eve of the Jazz Age: Its arched windows on the first floor, ornate lobby with 30-foot barrel-vaulted ceilings and curved skylights, and grand marble stairs with wrought iron railings exuded luxury. – The Virginian Hotel History
By the 1960s, the hotel closed, becoming a dormitory for Lynchburg Baptist College (now Liberty University).
More changes in the 1980s turned the upper floors into low income housing and the first floor (that still had marble, plaster and millwork in the grand ballroom) was reduced to storage.
Renovating the hotel in the 2014, with a touch of mid-century modern and a dash of the past, The Virginian Hotel reopened its doors.
OUR ELEGANT ROOM
OUT AND ABOUT
After a lovely dinner on the rooftop, we returned to our rooms to freshen up before walking to the nearby Academy Center of the Arts for the Thomas Jefferson and Lafayette 1824 Poplar Forest program.
After we returned that evening, we enjoyed a fire on the rooftop with a glass of wine…like many other guests.
SPA-LIKE BATHROOM
The next morning I leisurely enjoyed the spa-like bathroom, drawing water in the not-a-clawfoot tub!
Lovely bath beads and soaps were provided…
VIEWS
Views of the James River from our room…
…and the twisty turny road from whence we arrived the day before, after our tour of St. Stephens and A Severe Mercy.
We returned on that road to visit Poplar Forest and other A Severe Mercy sites.
Twas a short, but grand, stay!
