On President’s Day weekend, a threat of snow was in the air as we toured through the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg on Sunday afternoon.
By evening tide the snow fell, and the next morning the fresh powder and sunny clear blue skies beckoned us to a historic photo shoot!
Clear blue skies in the Virginia winter means more cold, so my kids were happy to have their 100% period accurate wool to keep them warm!
JUNIOR LAFAYETTE IN THE SNOW
Hurrying to the magazine before the snow melted, I hoped to recreate great military-styled shots for my son’s junior Lafayette regimental!
Although the first regimental for my son began humbly, the Colonial Williamsburg Costume Design Center and tailor encouraged me to to go period accurate all the way…to my son’s utter delight!
Tarpley’s store even helped enormously with his bespoke Lafayette hat!
The scattering of snow is even reminiscent of Valley Forge, since that horrid winter was more about lack of warm clothing in the cold of winter than deep snow.
All the angles had to include a cannon shot!
CARDINAL RED SET AGAINST THE SNOW
For my daughter, why not the elegance of the Governor’s Palace garden near the whimsical maze as she was bedecked with her cardinal red cloak?
Only three years before, on this day, we sold our Texas house and packed our stuff, prepared to move to Virginia.
Our lives have never been the same!
My love of Colonial Williamsburg fused with my kids’ dream for historically accurate clothing…achieved from the help of all the tailors and milliners, in the trade shop and at the Costume Design Center.
The warmth of period accurate 100% wool for my son’s regimental and my daughter’s cloak kept them plentifully warm as we journey through the 18th century historic area in the frigid chill of winter.
With the snow quickly melting, we turned our attention to the geese and blue heron at the canal…and then a lovely stroll through town before heading home from a memorable President’s Day weekend at Colonial Williamsburg.
