Refashioning a Plain Linen Skirt to Ruffle-licious

July 3, 2016

A few years ago, I bought this white linen skirt at TJ Maxx at a great price.

However, it forlornly hung in my closet unworn, because it seemed so plain and boring to me.

While purging my closet of clothes I don’t like, I realized I could easily revitalize them into something I really like by infusing a touch of flair that I learned from my historical sewing.

Why not?

SEWING A RESTYLED SKIRT

Cutting strips of fabric from the bottom, I ruffled then applied them to the new shorter skirt bottom.

Inspired by early 19th century prints, I added as many ruffled layers as I could.

Although my initial goal was three, two looked perfect to me.

Ta da!

This is now my favorite skirt in my daily wardrobe!

My new frills are fabulous to wear in every way!

While I like the way it looks, I must admit I’m having way too much fun walking around in it, as the frills bounce around on my knees with each step.

Since this skirt only cost $5, it was a great value because it was already sewn, perfectly fit and included a lovely hidden zipper.

Adding the self-fabric ruffles was a snap.

REFASHION REMAKE IDEAS

Now, I’m more open to buying plain clothes off the rack, knowing I can simply add a touch of flair to bring them to my favorite style.

I think my next project is my favorite jacket for cool weather, a pastel pink jacket I bought years ago when my kids were toddlers.

My favorite part of that jacket is the inside lining which is a synthetic silk tiny pink gingham.

However, over the years the edges of the cuffs have significantly frayed.

So now I’m on the lookout for a cute fabric or ribbon to adorn the edge of the cuffs.

And now I’m thinking about the old wool coat I have with boring buttons.

Why not replace them with new buttons I like more?

The ideas are endless for Refashion Remakes!

Best,
Quinn
