Pumpkin Carving Gospel Metaphor

October 31, 2007

Our traditional pumpkin carving assimilates an assortment of various Bible lessons my kids have learned over the years.

Then they brought home an activity paper from Sunday School, to which I’ve added some more comparisons.

A collection of verses paired with pumpking carving steps tell the gospel story.

Pumpkin Pulp Represents Sin

The yucky sticky pulp represents sin: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

Heart-shaped Eyes See God’s Love

Heart-shaped eyes, to see God’s love: But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Cross-Shaped Nose reminds us Jesus died for us

A cross-shaped nose, to remind us that Jesus died for our sins: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Fish-shaped mouth reminds us to share the gospel

Fish-shaped mouth (comprised of two Christian fish symbols, tails in the middle) to remind us to share the good news of God’s great gift: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Bible-shaped ears remind us to listen to God’s Word

Bible-shaped ears, to remind us to listen to God’s Word and to apply it to our lives: Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Pot Pourri Recipe repels bugs…and reminds us to stay away from sin

Rub pumpkin spice mix (combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, tad black pepper) inside the top of the pumpkin, studding some whole cloves into the top as well, to keep bugs at bay: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1

Candle reminds us to let our light shine

A candle inside the pumpkin to enjoy the lovely glow: You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16

Autumnal Aroma reminds us to spread the fragrance of knowing God

When lit, autumnal aroma fills the air: But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. II Corinthians 2:14

Fried Pumpkin Seeds Remind us of the Fruit of the Spirit

Finally, we clean, dry, and fry the pumpkin’s fruit of seeds to enjoy as a snack: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
