Inspired to sew by historic clothing: Colonial Williamsburg

September 20, 2010

Spending last Friday and Saturday at Colonial Williamsburg for my last historic sewing class, we began the weekend at the Tucker House where Lafayette grandly walked in.

Visiting Lafayette

Entering enthusiastically, he made various greetings, then he walked over to me, bowed, and said something to the effect of: What a pleasure to meet you Madame, since we’ve never met before!

My kids were laughing and laughing and so was I!

Then he shared a different version of the Lafayette story.

He had me riveted to see where he was going with his more in-depth story line of sharing his background in France.

Visiting the milliner

After chatting with him, we ate lunch then stopped by the milliner who showed the trim she was sewing for a silk jacket, and then she showed off an elegant silk gown for dancing.

I’d love to recreate this hat which looks so summery!

Military Review

The day ended with a military review…

Constitution Day Concert

That evening, we attended a Constitution Day concert in Merchant Square, featuring George Washington, James Madison, the CW Fife and Drum Corps, and the USAF band from Langley AFB.

Pinball class at Costume Design Center

The next morning, I learned about pinballs at my final 18th century sewing class, commemorating the CW Costume Design Center’s 75th anniversary.

Visiting Thomas Jefferson

Meanwhile Thomas Jefferson compared his cravat with my son’s.

Street theater historic clothing inspiration

The best theater experience is with historically accurate clothing set against original/restored/recreated buildings with recreated props from broadsides to carriages.
