Although we originally planned to go ice skating last weekend to begin the New Year, the weather was freezing with zero degree windchill.
Changing our plans, we visited the Washington National Cathedral instead.
When my son kept mentioning that it was a nice day out today, we decided to go ice skating in Washington DC.
Wearing a skirt and sweater set with my wool coat, I thought that would be perfect for a 1950-ish feel to coordinate with Frank Sinatra singing at the National Gallery of Art Ice Rink.
UNION STATION SURPRISE
After parking at Union Station, walking through the building and leaving the building, we saw all the bunting for the presidential inauguration in five days.
While walking down the street toward the US Capitol, we saw all the booths set up for the news teams that would cover the big day.
US CAPITOL SURPRISE
As we passed by the Capitol, we saw more completed preparation for the inauguration with two types of American flags and all the bleachers set up.
Wow! Seeing all the preparations were pretty cool since we’ve never attended an inauguration, and probably never will simply because it’s too cold! brrr
NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ICE SKATING RINK
Finally, we arrived at the National Gallery of Art Ice Skating Rink, across from which we can see the National Archives.
Enjoying some hot chocolate from the cafe, and even a delicious lunch, snacks, or pastries as needed, we had fun with the rest of the afternoon and evening ice skating.
We’ve never ice skated before until we’ve come here, and this is our third trip.
After the sun sets, the venue is even better when the lights strewn around the rink come on while we skate to the sounds of Frank Sinatra and the like.
US CAPITOL REFLECTION AT NIGHT
As we returned to Union Station, we again passed by the Capitol, seeing it’s reflection at night in the reflecting pool
