Feasting in a Garden under the Shadow of the Redwoods

July 31, 2025

Famished, we left our drive through-a-tree and fairyland experience near the Humboldt Redwoods State Park for Rte 101 to drive 41 miles to Leggett.

OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK

Unlike most of the eateries in Northern California, which are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, The Peg House is open seven days a week.

Since this day was a Wednesday, we were glad for it because the reviews and photos looked promising.

So named because it was built with pegs instead of nails, The Peg House invites guests to see them inside their gift shop, which we bypassed only because we had a tight schedule.

AMAZING SEATING

We walked into a huge outdoor area full of picnic tables with an ordering kiosk beyond, for which we made a beeline.

With their menu colorfully written out on a chalkboard, I honed in on the locally sourced grass fed beef (yea!!!) topped with cheese and apricot jam with the works, on ciabatta bread.

That apricot jam beckoned me…

While hubby paid, I looked for a place from the many tables when…wow!

On the far side all the tables were surrounded by potted gardens full of sunflowers, tomatoes and zinnias!

LIVE COUNTRY MUSIC

Behind us was a stage where a country western group was warming up…oh be still my heart.

How relaxing to hear the familiar twang with melodic strains without deafening our ears.

POTTED GARDENS

While waiting for lunch I checked out all the quaint tomatoes, so interesting.

It was fascinating to see all the variations of these dark purple tomatoes ripen from a spring green.

I used to grow tomatoes like this in my own vegetable garden, but my new home doesn’t have space for that.

WONDERFULLY IMAGINATIVE LUNCH

Once lunch arrived, I was delighted to see watermelon on the plate. Who does that? What a perfectly refreshing addition.

Although I usually skip the bun, but I do like ciabatta bread, and this was so fresh, and I was so hungry…and soon it was gone.

Afterwards we shared a blackberry ice cream sundae, only because I couldn’t resist…although we really didn’t need it.

See the Redwood Trees on the mountain?

This eatery is across the street from the entrance to the Standish Hickey State Recreation Area, which we did not have time to explore.

This place was too fun, but it was time to drive to San Francisco, because we had a plane to catch. Stay tuned.
