With so many major house remodel projects behind us, we turned our attention to our sad looking deck.
Well…the kitchen remodel is ongoing, but making progress.
But it’s spring, which means it’s cooler to conquer the deck before summer hits.
Fixing problems
First, the dangerously wobbly side was shored up.
Then the old non-functional tiki torches and lighting were removed.
After a power wash a few of the floorboards and part of the top of the railing needed replacement.
Once that was complete the deck was stained, which was super time consuming.
Not wanting an orangy look, I chose this dark walnut for the stain, which brings out great contrast and richness, complementing all those gorgeous trees.
After a couple of coats, and then a protective layer, it was looking like new!
Then rope lighting was applied underneath the rails.
Also, a new hand rail for the stairway was added, which was a ding we caught when the inspector toured the house with us before purchase.
As a result, we received credit on the sale, so we could chase down the coding issue ourselves.
I forgot a picture of it, but it’s a smaller handrail that runs parallel to the thicker handrail.
Container gardens of summer flowers
Once all of that was complete, I shopped for summer flowers!
On the other side of the patio table is a red hibiscus.
Near the grill is a small collection of vibrantly colorful flowers.
Daring to experiment, I have potted caladiums near the grill and on the other side of the patio table.
Container garden tip for hot summer
Although they are water loving and prefer shade, I thought I’d see how they do in Virginia.
They looked fresher last spring before the long summer of high heat, but they are still alive!
I think we broke the records of 100+ degree heat this year!
For my container gardens I purchase a special potting soil with moisturizer pellets which help a lot, especially when we are away for a few days.
Grilling
I love enjoying the deck while grilling dinner, usually every night.
Then we enjoy dinner out here every night.
Why not?
The views are gorgeous!
