Literally digging in, the British built fortifications (like redoubts) on each side of the York River, in both Yorktown and Gloucester Point.
Lt. Col. Tarleton and his legion, who had been sent by Gen. Cornwallis to defend Gloucester Point, were shocked when the French arrived by sea.
Fighting back angry tears of humiliation, the British army marched between two lines of soldiers, the Americans on one side and the French on the other.
Standing near reserved seating for special guests, we saw many French-American alliance pins, Lafayette scarves, and French- American alliance sashes.
Whereas we found the Napoleon cannons at Civil War battlefields in Virginia, today at the Yorktown Battlefield we found the Lafayette cannon.
This reenactment is based on actual documentation on events in April of 1781, when the British arrived at Mount Vernon from the Potomac.
