The key to one’s future is knowing how to read, which is the foundation of a classical education. Here are some things we did to help my struggling daughter.
My happy first grade memories recall reciting the pledge and singing a patriotic anthem while holding the American flag high at the beginning of the school day.
Since my daugter struggled with learning to read, due to undiagnosed vision issues, I found real books more helpful than the regimen of the pithy textbooks.
Mesmerized by pictures that stick to a board, they played with the felt figures themselves…a sensory integration activity that grew creativity.
As I flipped through the pages I was quite impressed. Beautifully illustrated, the book told far more of Squanto’s story than I had ever heard.
Since the hallmark of homeschooling is tailoring lessons to each student, I took advantage of that opportunity by using my toolbox of ideas which was both book-based and interactive.
Learning phonics was a struggle for my daughter, who had undiagnosed vision issues.
I taught her phonics by using several tricks out of my collegiate tool bag.
Counseled by my daughter’s occupational therapist to teach her cursive, not print, in kindergarten, I learned lots of tips that wroked beautifully.
