I can’t believe summer is nearly over.
While organizing my closet, I looked at from the perspective of the bespoke wardrobe I’m sewing, from historical eras to vintage flair, which I grouped into various categories.
HISTORICAL CHINTZ, SILK, AND ORGANDY
In the header photo are several historical gowns I sewed, from the 1770s to 1912, which are my favorite.
From chintzes to silks amidst pearls and organdy, slipping them on takes me to another era.
Learning to sew these garments of yore led to my journey for vintage flair from day to day, showcased below.
SEERSUCKER, STRIPES, AND CHECKS
Then my collection of ginghams and stripes, oft with seersucker and embroidery from the 1960s to the present day, a colorful bunch.
These four completed garments I’ve sewn and worn this summer, most of which my son has photographed me in: 1960s blue gingham dress, 1980s red and white striped breezy sundress, and two yellow ginghams, one as a robe and another as a dress.
The yellow gingham dress I have worn several times this summer: to a wedding where I did some swing dancing and out and about Washington DC.
WHITES TO ECRU FLORALS AND EMBROIDERIES
In shades from white to ecru are these five blouses and one dress are still works in progress to handsew buttonholes, since my sewing machine simply can’t.
JUXTAPOSITION OF STRIPES FROM SHEER TO OPAQUE
These two sun dresses are nearly finished, both a lovely play of narrow stripes, one juxtaposed as a sheer and the other opaque, and both are made from extra fabric from historical gowns I’ve sewn.
AUTUMNAL/WINTER ARRIVALS OF DARKS
I’ve loved sewing with these lovely pastels. Soon I will be sewing autumn/winter clothing with my darker colored fabrics.
