Simplistically Separating a Mixture in Chemistry I

December 14, 2011

While studying science with Dr. Jay Wile, my tenth grade son immersed himself in impressive labs for his Chemistry I studies.

I wondered if one of us should pose as Igor or Inga to assist?

Nevertheless, this lab was one of the simplest in the book…one that my daughter did not struggle with during her studies.

My son, though, understands every complexity of all the beakers, test tubes, bubbles, and wires.

In this lab, he simply separated a mixture of sand, salt, and water.

Then he poured the mixture into a funnel lined with coffee filter paper (see header photo)…making sure to scrape out all the parts.

Again, I wish I had my kids doing science together, because my son would have made a great teacher, greatly helping his sister!
