Returning to our lodging, I fell asleep for a long nap after that wonderful three mile walk on the beach.
When I awoke, my hubby suggested I look for a site to enjoy and a spot for dinner.
While I don’t remember where we had dinner, I do recall an amazing tour of the wild Corolla horses.
HUMMER ADVENTURE TOURS
Thrilled to have found the Hummer Adventure Tours, because I’ve always wanted to ride in a Hummer, I set up all the reservations for the evening, last tour of the day then dinner.
Riding to the north shore, we drove nearly all the way to Virginia and back on the entirety of the trip.
Just before turning onto the beach, we saw our first horses (see header photo).
At this point the paved road ends and it’s sandy roads for four wheel drives all the way.
Zipping along the beach looking for horses.
Because the mid-May weather was refreshingly cool, the horses were in the interior grazing on their food supply.
When the weather turns hot, the bugs return, driving out the horses to the beach to relieve themselves of the bugs in the ocean water.
There were many horses to be seen that day, and the tour guide knew all their names and habits.
Although people live on this end of the island, or rent property as tourists, they must abide by a few rules, because this land belongs to the horses.
We must always stay at least 50 feet away and not interact with them.
Descended from 16th century Spanish horses that washed ashore after shipwrecks, these Banker Horses have unique characteristics: stocky bodies, short legs, fluffy fur.
After the tour, I had to agree with the name of our Hummer…Bravo!
And thus culminated our first day in the Outer Banks, with four more days to go.
Although it looked like rain with 60 degree temps for the entire week, we were glad to enjoy warm sunshine on this day.
We’ll see what the rest of the week brings. Stay tuned!
