Mother of the Bride Dress: Audrey Hepburn, Givenchy, Sabrina

October 18, 2019

After I sewed my daughter’s bespoke vintage wedding dress, I sewed my vintage mother-of-the-bride dress.

PATTERN

Perusing my patterns, I kept wanting to sew a dress from Vogue 8874, issued in 1957.

At one time we had considered that the long dress would be for my daughter, and the shorter dress for her bridesmaids.

When the time came to decide, my daughter preferred a different vintage style.

Wanting to sew this style of vintage dress, I thought my daughter’s wedding would be the perfect occasion to wear it.

FABRIC

After shopping with my daughter for special wedding fabric at the JoAnns in Northern Virginia, I decided to try elsewhere.

While shopping with her I saw nothing I liked for myself.

Trying a store I recently learned of in Alexandria, I found lots of silk dupioni that I fell in love with, especially one in lavender.

The fabric is so delightfully light and crisp.

When I showed my daughter, she highly approved of the pattern and fabric.

SHOE SHOPPING

Stumbling upon these shoes the year before, I tried them on and loved them.

Since they were so comfortable and stylish, I bought them, knowing there would most likely be a wedding for my daughter soon.

GIVENCHY AUDREY HEPBURN 1954 DRESS DESIGN

While I was excited my daughter and I would both be wearing 1957 vintage styled dresses, I was completely beside myself when I realized we would both be wearing Givenchy Audrey Hepburn inspired styles!

My pattern looks as though it was inspired by the Givenchy Little Black Dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1954 movie, Sabrina.

Finally, she slipped into what is today simply known as the ‘Sabrina’-the black cocktail dress with the bateau neckline…-GlamAmor website; Style Essentials: Audrey Hepburn’s Costumes Cause the (Oscar) Drama in 1954’s Sabrina

However, my skirt is not full, nor does the back of my dress have a deep v-shape.

Instead, my skirt appears slim in the front, then flairs in the back.

Nevertheless, my dress does have a bateau neckline, and a nip at the waist.

And of course the lines of the dress, perfect in their simplicity with a nipped in waist and full ballerina skirt, would be done again and again by Givenchy, including for Funny Face (1957). –GlamAmor website; Style Essentials: Audrey Hepburn’s Costumes Cause the (Oscar) Drama in 1954’s Sabrina

Love that comparison of the two dresses my daughter and I wore at her wedding!
