We filled our few days at Colonial Williamsburg during Independence Day week with some new experiences.
BEFORE INDEPENDENCE DAY
Beginning our week at the brickyard to see the clamp after the recent burn, we helped make future bricks by historically playing in the mud!
After we cleaned up, we journeyed to the Governor’s Palace to listen to Patrick Henry’s latest orations, and then to visit with him afterwards.
INDEPENDENDENCE DAY
My favorite part of Independence Day at Colonial Williamsburg is Salute to the States with the Fife and Drum Corps and Virginia Militia, firing cannons, waving flags, and beating out tunes with fifes and drums while celebrating the original thirteen colonies with a song specific to each.
Then we attended another favorite event, the public reading of Declaration of Independence with Patrick Henry!
My son playing the fife and wearing the new shirt I sewed for him.
Another favorite Independence Day event was visiting one of our Founding Fathers, this year General Washington!
My daughter trimmed her hat for the celebration of the day.
After picnicking on homemade beef BBQ sandwiches, we enjoyed the fireworks.
AFTER INDEPENDENCE DAY
55TH ANNIVERSARY FIFE AND DRUM CORPS
Traditionally in the middle of the day there is a march of the Fife and Drum Corps down the Duke of Gloucester Street from the Capitol to the Palace.
This time we were surprised to find not only the Junior Fife and Drum Corps…
…but also the Alumni Fife and Drum Corps (usually there is only one corps marching…
…with the additional surprise of the Senior Fife and Drum Corps coming down the street!
Marching all the way to the Governor’s Palace from the Capitol, all of them put on a terrific show.
We were told it was for the 55th anniversary!
Each drum major for each of the three units led them in unison!
ARMOURY VISIT
While visiting the Armoury, we saw the new construction…
TINSMITH, NOT TINMAN
While walking through the Armoury Complex, we noticed the door open to the tin shop, where we met the new tin smith outfitting his new shop!
His equipment was still in the process of coming in, so we are looking forward to more formal visit with him later, but thank him for the sneak peak into his trade.
