Last weekend the kids and I experienced over 500 years of history.
Longbows featured prominently in the Hundred Years’ War as it did in my son’s fascination, into which he’s pulled me.
Thus, on Saturday morning, we attended the British Longbow Tournament, outside of the historic area.
Throughout the rest of the weekend we time traveled to 1862, the Battle of Williamsburg in the historic area, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary.
YELLOW GOWN REQUEST
On top of all that our frolick-some friends arrived debuting a gorgeous new Civil War gown that Rebecca sewed for Ashley!
Planning on meeting up, Rebecca wanted me to wear my yellow gown so we could all be dressed in proper attire in the historic area.
Even though Rebecca coordinated our gowns for a photo op, we totally forgot in all the merriment.
The only photos taken of us together were by the other guests.
PALACE GARDEN PHOTOS
Before we met up, we arrived early enough at the Governor’s Palace on Friday morning to see Patrick Henry for a Public Audience, we took a few photos in the gorgeous gardens!
I wondered what took my son so long to take my picture, because I was surprised to see that he took several shots of me.
While we were playing with different poses for interesting pictures, some ladies walking by asked us to sit on the bench so they could take a picture of us.
COLONIAL FRIENDS, GUESTS, AND PHOTOS
After they left, we walked around the gardens then found a seat behind some guests who were talking about WWII, which was quite interesting because two of them were WWII vets!
Asking us lots of questions, they were impressed that I sewed the costumes myself.
The man sitting in front of us asked his wife and daughter to take a picture of us and the wife said, “I already did. See.”
And there were the kids and I sitting on the bench!
As we walked up to Patrick Henry after his program to talk about mercantilism, he commended the kids for getting me to wear a costume!
Another guest chatting with me was flabbergasted to hear that I was the mother of my kids.
She thought I was an older sibling!
Oh my! She’s my new best friend!
After my kids chatted to the cook at the Armoury kitchen about mercantilism, a group of young guests asked me if we were reporters.
No, just homeschoolers, I smiled.
Smiling back, they asked the five of us to pose for pictures, then our party of five merrily walked down the street to a music program.
CUSTIS TENEMENT GARDEN PHOTOS
At the end of the day, we were looking at the lovely Custis Tenement garden when some people walking by asked to pose for a photo.
After they took our picture, I pulled my camera out of my pocket and asked if they’d mind taking a picture of us.
When they registered surprise, I told them we weren’t employees, but guests, and everyone takes pictures of us, but we rarely have anyone around to take a picture on my phone for us to keep.
Laughing, they happily complied.
Through the course of conversation, they said they were from Wichita Falls, Texas, so we exclaimed that we used to live there!
After a good little Texas chat, we finished taking individual shots.
Then we proceeded to the Cheese Shop in Merchant Square for the best sandwiches in the world.
