Now that the kitchen was repainted, the window treatments were done, and we had a new microwave with display shelf over it, new appliances jumped to the top of the list.
Since all the appliances were old, it wasn’t a shock when the oven died the week before Thanksgiving.
Due to that event, we went appliance shopping.
In Texas, I upgraded my cheap builder-grade stove to a ceramic flat top with convection oven.
I fell in love with cooking with the convection oven, and could tell the difference in the plunky unreliable oven in the our Virginia house.
Since none of the floor models were convection, the salesman showed us the catalog to select a gas stove with convection feature (GE Profile).
While there we also purchased a new refrigerator (Samsung) and dishwasher (Bosch).
With delivery set for the day before Thanksgiving, I faithfully bought groceries for Thanksgiving dinner.
Test driving the oven for Thanksgiving dinner
With this fancy stove I had a bit of learning curve in preparing Thanksgiving dinner, but it was the best meal we had the entire time in the house.
The oven has an internal temperature probe, one side of which inserts into the oven while the other inserts into the meat.
After I set the desired internal temperature of the meat, the oven beeps when that is reached.
Except I have fiddly times with turkey, since the breast cooks faster than the thigh.
Although I had the probe inside the thigh, the juices still looked bloody…although the meat seemed to be cooked.
That was the biggest challenge.
Over all, it’s nice to have a stove that cooks evenly, a freezer that freezes, and a dishwasher that washes without sounding like a busy airport runway.
Epilogue
Love the GE Profile Gas Stove/Convection Oven and the Bosch Dishwasher.
The Bosch is the best dishwasher I’ve ever had: clean dishes, no spots, so quiet I wasn’t sure if it was on or not.
However, the Samsung, which I never wanted) gets ice jammed in the ice cube maker. Dumping out all the ice once a week was our only solution to the ice jams.
Other than that, I liked the roominess and organization of it.
